Bear baiting is an area of hunting that has a seemingly endless stream of methods. Every hunter seems to have his own school of thought on the matter. While it seems to be the general consensus that black bears are not picky eaters, I tend to think you still need to determine what is the right method for the area you hunt and the bears in it.
So what do I know anyway?
Since I am a purely well read bear baiter and not a seasoned practitioner, I would be remiss if I didn’t tell you not to take my advice on the subject. However, the intention of this post is to invite you to follow us as we experiment with some different bait and methods in both the spring and fall 2015 seasons.
We will research and share our discoveries as we put them to the test in the field. We’ll show you the bear bait and stand set-up, types of feed and our bait receptacles as well as any attractant methods we employ. We will post photos and maybe even a few videos of the process and hopefully (fingers crossed) a nice big black bear or two if all goes well.
If you have any tips or suggestions for us to try out, we would love to hear from you. Please email us your name, where you’re from and your bear baiting tips.
What we’ve learned so far
We’ve been asking around for some bear baiting and hunting tips and our friend Kim Hoffman from Holt Lake Lodge Adventures in northern Saskatchewan sent us some great info on his methods. Click here to find out what he had to offer.
